Suggestions for Using Online Learning Resources
A number of square dance groups provide online resources that new square dancers sometimes find very useful!
This page will describe some of these resources and explain how to access them easily through the
Bows & Beaus home page.

Class News
The Class News section of the
Bows & Beaus home page is the place to
find all the latest news concerning the current class!
It includes a link to a
List of Calls Taught
which is updated every week with a week-by-week listing of the calls that have been taught.
This List of Calls Taught also provides links to
other learning resources, described below.
These include written descriptions (definitions), animations, and videos for most of the calls!
Videos
The Saddlebrooke Squares of Tucson, Arizona, and their caller, Larry Kraber,
have produced a series of online teaching videos. Originally designed for use by their own classes,
each short video shows several calls,
and may include some calls that have not yet been taught in our class.
Designed as teaching aids, they describe and show the most common usage of each call.
For an exact definition of a call, use the Definitions & Animations link, described below.
To access these videos from the Bows & Beaus home page, go to the
Class News section and click on
List of Calls Taught.
Then, click on the name of a particular call to view the video which includes that call.
Definitions
Callerlab (the International Association of Square Dance Callers) has developed
very precise definitions for each call in the various square dance "programs" (in our class
we teach the Basic, Mainstream, and Plus programs).
These definitions are generally recognized as the accepted standard throughout the world.
If you really want to know the proper way to execute a call, the Callerlab definition
is the place to look! Be aware, however, that these definitions may sometimes provide more information than
a beginning square dancer really wants to know (some of this information is to benefit callers)!
Our local Santa Clara Valley Square Dancers Association makes available a web page for each participating
class with links to the definition of each call.
To access these definitions from the Bows & Beaus home page, go to the
Class News section and click on
List of Calls Taught.
Then click on
View Definitions & Animations
Finally, select a call from the list at the left side of the page.
Animations
The web page provided by the Santa Clara Valley Square Dancers Association also includes (in addition
to the Definitions) links to three different sets of Animations provided by various square dance groups
around the world!
To access these animations from the Bows & Beaus home page, go to the
Class News section and click on
List of Calls Taught.
On this list, click on
View Definitions & Animations.
Then click on the name of a call.
In the upper right corner of the definition page click on each of the three icons to see the various
animations of the call. You may want to experiment to find the animation that is most meaningful to you and which
works best on your computer.
